Let's start The Line Movers Network 2022 College Football Preview Series with
My TOP 14 Out Of Conference Games You Won't Want to Miss
(In order of game date)
Sept. 1
West Virginia @ Pitt
The Backyard Brawl is back after a long break and this Thursday Night Battle will start your college football weekend off with a Big Bang. Mountaineers and Panthers, college football is back!
Sept. 3
Cincinnati @ Arkansas
The Bearcats are fresh off their College Football Playoff berth, the Razorbacks are looking to build on a strong 9-4 season under Sam Pittman. The Bearcats will need to replace QB Desmond Ritter on O and Sauce Gardner on D.
Oregon vs Georgia (in Atlanta)
Georgia will have the home crowd feel in nearby Atlanta. New Ducks Head Coach Dan Lanning is familiar with the Dawgs, he was the D Coordinator for the champs last year. Georgia is familiar with Ducks QB Bo Nix who spent the last 3 years as the starting QB at SEC Rival Auburn. We will find out quickly if the Ducks are playoff contenders or pretenders.
Arizona @ San Diego State
This game made the list for two reasons. One, I'm an AZ Alum and the Aztecs open their brand new beautiful Snapdragon Stadium. The Wildcats look to build in year 2 of the Jedd Fisch era after a tough 1 win season in 2021. The Aztecs have high hopes this year and look to stay atop the Mountain West.
Utah @ Florida
The Utes have as much preseason hype as any team in the country. If they want to crash the Playoff Party on New Years they will need to start with a win in the Swamp. There is plenty of hope in Gainesville as they kick off the Billy Napier era. The Gator faithful believe they have found their man who built the program from the ground up at Louisiana. This will be a much tougher rebuild for Napier in brutal SEC Country.
Notre Dame @ Ohio State
Marcus Freeman's first game as Irish Head Man comes under the light's, week 1 in "The Shoe".
We will find out quickly what Freeman has in his rookie year as the Buckeyes are a consensus top 2 team in America. This year is Championship or Bust for Ohio State as this roster is absolutely loaded at every position. The Buckeye QB and Heisman favorite is CJ Stroud, who can make this offense explosive with his arm and legs.
Sept. 4
Florida State vs LSU (in New Orleans)
The Brian Kelly era at LSU kicks off in the Tigers backyard at the Super Dome. Is Mike Norvell on the hot seat in Tallahassee? He could use a stand alone Sunday Night Holiday Weekend Win in what will be a hostile environment playing the Tigers in New Orleans.
Sept. 10
Alabama @ Texas
This might be the biggest game in Austin in a long long time. Head Coach Steve Sarkisian would love nothing more than to beat his former boss, Nick Saban. It will be a tough task as the Tide Roll into Austin ranked #1 in the Nation. All eyes on Texas for this early season showdown.
Iowa State @ Iowa
The Cyclones have to replace huge losses on offense without QB Brock Purdy and RB Breece Hall. Matt Campbell is regarded as one of the hot young coaches in the game. The Hawkeyes will be ready when their in-state rival comes to Iowa City, a state bragging rights game that always delivers. The Hawkeyes believe they can contend for the BIG 10 title this season.
Sept. 17
Oklahoma @ Nebraska
If you're a fan of the old Big 8 Conference this game is for you. Two of college football's best programs do battle in Lincoln. The best defensive coordinator in college football the last decade has decided to take the head job in Norman. Brent Venables is the new head coach for the Sooners. The Cornhusker faithful want to see their team return to national prominence and Scott Frost might be running out of time. Frost needs to get this season off to a good start and knocking off the Sooners in front of the home crowd would go a long way towards that goal.
Penn State @ Auburn
Tigers Coach Brian Harsin has had a rough first year on and off the field. He has made it to season two and should be 2-0 when the Nittany Lions head to Auburn for a national showdown. This would be a big victory for War Eagle before they head into SEC play. PSU has shown Coach James Franklin the love with a huge new contract midway through last season. Penn State faithful wanted to see BIG 10 Titles and National runs before breaking the bank for Franklin. High hopes in State College this season and the Buckeyes come to Happy Valley in late October.
BYU @ Oregon
Cougars and Ducks in Eugene should be a fantastic showdown. The Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in 2022 and this test with Oregon will be huge for both teams. Oregon has as tough out of conference games as anyone in the country. We already listed the Ducks opener against the champion UGA Bulldogs in Atlanta, now a very talented, well coached BYU squad comes calling.
Miami @ Texas A&M
Both the Hurricanes and Aggies believe they are title contenders this season. The winner of this matchup will be confident heading to conference play. Miami will lean on QB Tyler Van Dyke who showed signs last year that he could be Miami's next great QB. High hopes for Coach Jimbo Fisher this season as some believe they can contend with Alabama in the SEC West.
November 5
Clemson @ Notre Dame
Clemson made the college football playoffs 6 straight seasons before missing out last year. That is how dominant a program Dabo has built at Clemson. If the Tigers are in the playoff hunt come November this will be quite the showcase game at Notre Dame. It will be a very interesting season in South Bend, off an 11-2 season last year. Will the Irish remain a national player without Brian Kelly?
